Australia has some of the highest UV levels in the world.
On a sunny summer day UV radiation is strong enough to cause sunburn in just 11 minutes. A UV level 3 and above means that sun protection is required between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. In Melbourne during autumn and winter (May to August) the UV level is usually below 3 so sun protection is not required then.
How to Apply Sunscreen Properly
For maximum protection, use SPF 30+ or higher broad spectrum sunscreen Reapply every 2 hours or more frequently after swimming or working up a sweat. Use the SunSmart sunscreen calculator to find out how much you need to apply.
